On October 7, 2024, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Witaya Wannasuphoprasit (Dean of Faculty of Engineering), Assoc. Prof. Sawekchai Tangaramvong (Associate Dean of Academics Affairs), Prof. Chalermchon Satirapod (Associate Dean of Research Affairs), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Natt Leelawat (Assistant Dean for International Affairs) and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Charusluk Viphavakit (Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs) from Chula Engineering welcomed representatives from The University of New South Wales (UNSW Sydney), Dr. Hoang-Phuong Phan, (Associate Dean International ASEAN), Ms. Kiri Murphy (Head of International Development – Engineering), and Kakanang Kittikovit (Country Manager – Thailand Division of Education & Student Experience) at Suan Ruam Jai Meeting Room 2, Engineering Building 3, Faculty of Engineering, Chulalongkorn University.

In addition to the introduction of each organization, there was a discussion on future collaboration topics such as exchange students, online course, etc. between The University of New South Wales (UNSW Sydney) and Chula Engineering.

Chula Engineering faculty members and students together with AIT’s Ph.D. Student won the Gold Medals and Special Awards from iCAN2024

On August 24, 2024, the Toronto International Society of Innovation & Advanced Skills (TISIAS), Canada, hosted the 9th Annual Edition of the International Invention Innovation Competition in Canada (iCAN 2024). The event saw participation from innovators 50 countries and regions from around the world.

The project titled “Exploring Human’s Decision Making in Tsunami Disaster Evacuation using Virtual Reality,” by Assoc. Prof. Natt Leelawat, D.Eng. (Associate Professor, Department of Industrial Engineering, Chula Engineering), Dr. Jing Tang (Lecturer, International School of Engineering (ISE), Chula Engineering), Mr. Kao Jongsaratis and Mr. Thachapong Chumpasiri (Undergraduate students, Department of Industrial Engineering, Chula Engineering), and Mr. Nattapon Trumikaborworn (Ph.D. student, Asian Institute of Technology), won the Gold Medal at iCAN 2024. Additionally, this innovative received the TISIAS Special Award from the Toronto International Society of Innovation & Advanced Skills, and the TUMMIAD Special Award from the Turkish Inventors Association, Turkey.

Also, the project titled “Thai Language Viral Marketing Content Generation using NLP and Generative AI,” by Dr. Jing Tang (Lecturer, ISE, Chula Engineering), Mr. Paranut Prasittipap, Mr. Pattadon Naksuwan, Ms. Yanisa Laovilailert, and Mr. Weinian (Undergraduate students, Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Engineering Program, ISE, Chula, won the Gold Medal at iCAN 2024. In addition, this innovative work received the Canadian Special Award of Excellence from the Inventors Circle.

Chula Engineering and Tokyo Institute of Technology launched the collaborative course – the 9th Global Awareness for Technology Implementation (GATI#9)

The Faculty of Engineering at Chulalongkorn University, in collaboration with Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan, has launched the 2024 Academic Exchange Program as a part of the course 2100310 Global Awareness for Technology Implementation (GATI), aimed at fostering academic exchange and collaborative activities between students from both countries. The program also emphasizes cultural exchange, including traditions, laws, regulations, beliefs, practices, and societal values, under the theme “Resilient City.”

On August 27, 2024, Associate Professor Natt Leelawat, D.Eng. (Assistant Dean for International Affairs), Dr. Jing Tang, and the Acting Head of the Educational Integration Mission, Academic Affairs, welcomed faculty members, staff, and students from Tokyo Institute of Technology. Associate Professor Sawekchai Tangaramvong, Ph.D. (Associate Dean for Academic Affairs) officially opened the event at the Auditorium Zone, True Lab @ Chula Engineering: 5G & Innovative Solution Center.

The participants also visited the International Program in Industrial Design at the Faculty of Architecture (CommDe ID Chula). Associate Professor Juthamas Tangsantikul, Ph.D. (Head of the Department of Industrial Design), Associate Professor Takerng Pattanopas, Ph.D. (Program Director), and Assistant Professor Puvanai Dardarananda, Ph.D. (Chair of the Communication Design Program (International Program)), shared their knowledge and experiences in innovative industrial design and guided a tour of the department’s laboratories.

The program included external study visits to various organizations, such as the FutureTales LAB Exhibition by MQDC and the National Disaster Warning Center, Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, where representatives from the warning center provided insights on resilience operations. Additionally, participants visited the Coastal Hydraulics Laboratory, presented by Assistant Professor Anurak Sriariyawat, Ph.D., from the Department of Water Resources Engineering, Chula Engineering.

The exchange program also featured a study visit on resilience and carbon credits at Koh Jik, Chanthaburi Province. The group was welcomed and briefed by Village Head and Chairman of the Koh Jik Village Committee. They also explored the Eco-Museum Community Enterprise at Ban Chang Thun, Trat Province. The visit concluded with a tour of the Kung Krabaen Bay Royal Development Study Center, focusing on interdisciplinary natural resource management and mangrove conservation, from August 31 to September 2, 2024.

Ms. Lise Talbot-Barré, Cultural and Cooperation Counselor of the French Embassy in Thailand, and Professor Dr. Wilert Puriwat, President of Chulalongkorn University, presided over the celebration ceremony commemorating the 10th anniversary of the partnership between the Faculty of Engineering, Chulalongkorn University, led by Associate Professor Dr. Wittaya Wannasuphoprasit, Dean of the Faculty, and ECAM LaSalle, a leading engineering school in France, represented by President Mr. Didier Desplanche. The ceremony was held at the Faculty of Engineering, Chulalongkorn University, with the presence of distinguished guests from academia, government, and private sectors, as well as representatives from French industrial companies led by Mr. Patrice Pischedda, President of the Franco-Thai Chamber of Commerce.

Since the beginning of their collaboration in 2014, this partnership has been a cornerstone of academic excellence and international cooperation for the past decade. The collaboration has been marked by successful student exchange programs and innovative educational initiatives that have enriched the academic experience for both students and faculty.

Key Achievements of the Collaboration:
– Student Exchange and Internships: The program has provided invaluable international experiences to students, equipping them with a global perspective and enhancing their professional opportunities. Over 50 students from ECAM LaSalle have studied at the Faculty of Engineering, Chulalongkorn University over the past 10 years, and nearly 20 Thai students have had the opportunity to study at ECAM LaSalle in Lyon, France.
– Exchange of Teaching Techniques and Expertise: Faculty members from both institutions have shared knowledge and effective teaching methodologies, creating a more enriching learning environment and driving engineering skills forward in response to global changes.

This collaboration not only focuses on academic excellence but also fosters deeper cultural understanding between Thailand and France, strengthening relationships between institutions and laying the foundation for future cooperation that addresses the evolving needs of global engineering.

Associate Professor Dr. Wittaya Wannasuphoprasit, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Chulalongkorn University, stated: “The past decade has been an incredible journey of innovation and mutual growth. Our partnership with ECAM LaSalle has set a high standard for international academic collaboration, and we are excited to continue building on this strong foundation. Moving forward, we will focus more on working with the industry. Mr. Patrice Pischedda, President of the Franco-Thai Chamber of Commerce, noted: “As the French Chamber of Commerce in Thailand, our role is to promote collaboration with Thai partners and institutions so that our members, mostly French companies based in Thailand, can work more efficiently. One key focus is recruiting and training skilled personnel, especially high-quality engineers. Therefore, we encourage and support close collaboration and exchange of information and perspectives with educational institutions to ensure that the new generation of talents can work effectively in the real world.”

The next step is to further strengthen collaboration with both Thai and French industries in Thailand and France. These collaborations will focus on research, innovation, technology transfer, and addressing social and industrial challenges. Key cooperation areas include research and development, technology transfer and innovation, internships and personnel development, consulting and problem-solving, as well as joint laboratories and research centers.

Chula Engineering and Keio University’s Faculty Members Win Best Paper Award at ISCIT 2024

During September 23-24, 2024, the Electrical, Electronics, Computer, Telecommunications, and Information Technology Association of Thailand (ECTI Association), in collaboration with King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi, hosted the 23rd International Symposium on Communications and Information Technologies (ISCIT 2024) at the Knowledge Exchange Building, King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi, Bangkok, Thailand. The event attracted faculty members, researchers, students, and interested participants from various countries.

Following a selection process by a panel of esteemed judges, the research paper titled “Monitoring Industrial Zone Activities Through Wavelet Analysis of Air Quality Time Series Data” was awarded the Best Paper Award on September 24, 2024. The paper was co-authored by Assoc. Prof. Akira Kodaka, Ph.D. (Keio University, Japan, and affiliated researcher at the Department of Industrial Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Chulalongkorn University), Assoc. Prof. Natt Leelawat, D.Eng. (Assistant Dean and Associate Professor of the Department of Industrial Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Chulalongkorn University), and Prof. Naohiko Kohtake, Ph.D. (Keio University, Japan).

This collaborative research between Keio University and Chulalongkorn University investigates changes in atmospheric composition, specifically the concentrations of NO2 and PM2.5, using satellite data to compare with industrial activities. The findings aim to provide valuable data for Area-Business Continuity Management Systems.

Chula Engineering Hosts BKK One Day Tour for New International Students

On Friday, September 20, 2024, the Faculty of Engineering at Chulalongkorn University, through its Office of International Affairs, organized the “BKK One Day Tour” as part of the Welcome New Chula Engineering International Student Program for the first semester of the academic year 2024.

The tour aimed to provide international students with the opportunity to explore and understand the richness of Thai culture and history. The participants visited the Museum Siam, where they were introduced to the history of Thailand through interactive exhibitions that showcased artifacts, paintings, and audiovisual displays representing different eras of Thai history.
.
The students also visited Wat Pho (Wat Phra Chetuphon Wimonmangkalaram Ratchaworamahawihan), where they marveled at the Thai architectural beauty and studied stone inscriptions detailing historical events. This exploration gave them a deeper appreciation of Thai craftsmanship and cultural heritage.
.
Through the BKK One Day Tour, the international students gained valuable insights into Thailand’s rich traditions and history, fostering cultural understanding and helping them adapt to life in Thailand.

Thai Cooking Class Welcomes New International Students at Chula Engineering

On Monday, September 16, 2024, the Faculty of Engineering at Chulalongkorn University, through the Administrative Affairs and International Relations division, organized a Thai Cooking Class as part of the Welcome New Chula Engineering International Student Program for the 1st semester of 2024.

The event aimed to introduce international students to the basics of Thai cooking through hands-on lessons, featuring popular dishes such as Som Tum Thai (Green Papaya Salad), Larb Gai (Spicy Minced Chicken Salad), and a traditional Thai dessert, Bua Loy. The students not only learned how to prepare these dishes but also had the opportunity to cook and taste their own creations.

The Thai Cooking Class served as more than just a culinary experience. It provided international students with an opportunity to immerse themselves in Thai culture while fostering cultural exchange through food, as students from various countries shared their own culinary traditions.

This event is part of Chula Engineering’s commitment to enhancing the international student experience by promoting cultural understanding and integration.
