Chula Engineering and AIS 5G showcase AIS 5G PLAY GROUND & 5G GARAGE The first Sandbox to be powered by 5G networks on 2600 MHz and 26 GHz Students and developers are invited to create 5G Use Cases to support the digital economy

23 August 2022: The Faculty of Engineering at Chulalongkorn University has partnered with AIS 5G since the initial trials of 5G in 2018 to the present. They have launched an R&D 5G centre, the first ever “AIS 5G PLAY GROUND & 5G GARAGE” in Thailand in Chula Engineering’s Centennial Memorial Building. Chula Engineering has installed a LIVE Private Network with 5G base stations on 2 frequencies: 2600 MHz and 26 GHz (mmWave), and other activities to support research into 5G innovation for both students and faculty. This support provided by the industry will strengthen the country as a whole.

Wasit Wattanasap, Head of Nationwide Operation and Support Department at Advanced Info Service Pcl. (AIS), said at the launch of AIS 5G PLAY GROUND & 5G GARAGE, a cooperation with the Faculty of Engineering at Chulalongkorn University. “We are extremely honoured and proud to be involved in supporting education, providing spaces to develop readiness for students, developers and everybody involved in Thailand’s digital tech industries to have the chance for hands-on experimentation and develop their ideas with new technologies such as AI, ML, VR, AR, MR, IoT, Metaverse and Robotics, all on 5G.

“Although Thailand has had commercial 5G services since 2020, with AIS the first provider to launch the service on 1420 MHz, it is still necessary to develop the benefits of 5G to upgrade industry and infrastructure for the people. Digital transformation in particular will transform the business models of every sector to be ready to deal with the changes wrought by digital disruption and the outbreak of COVID-19. Therefore, working with the education sector for the purposes of research and development, as well as trials and experimentation, has always been our top priority. This cooperation with Chula Engineering from 2018 to the present is still ongoing through the development of different use cases, both from the research of the faculty and student projects. All of them are focused on innovating for the nation.

“The first ever AIS 5G PLAY GROUND & 5G GARAGE in Thailand, at Chula Engineering’s Centennial Memorial Building, has the goal of being a space for experimentation and trials of 5G in a LIVE Private Network environment. Students, faculty members, and developers in the 5G ecosystem can use the space and the unlimited 5G installed to study and test different technologies such as AI, ML, VR, AR, MR, IoT, Metaverse and Robotics. 5G base stations operating on 2600 MHz and 26 GHz (mmWave) have been installed to support a diversity of use cases, including Industrial Solutions, Holograms Solutions, or Fixed Wireless Access (FWA). Spectral bands such as 26 GHz offer vast amounts of bandwidth with low latency. There is also support for transmitting equipment such as 5G CPE, providing know-how about 5G tech work structures. On top of this, there are seminars and workshops with guest speakers from many industries to develop technical skills in both hard skills and soft skills, and while inviting them to co-develop prototype services on 5G networks.”

Prof. Supot Teachavorasinskun, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at Chulalongkorn University, said, “Chula Engineering is a technically-focused educational institution working with every sector, including state organizations such as NBTC and DE, or the private sector, to test out use cases which could maximally benefit core sectors of the economy. Therefore, a developers’ environment for virtual reality such as AIS 5G Playground and 5G Garage provides 5G Spectra in a LIVE Network format to meet the needs of students and faculty as a space for research and exchanging ideas, and creating innovations in the Sandbox. Crucially, it is a combining of theoretical and practical knowledge gained from real-use experience from AIS, which will enhance skills for students and faculty in developing innovations for Thailand through 5G in the most appropriate manner.” Mr. Wasit concluded, “The educational sector prioritizes training and skills to support 5G technology, which is an admirable vision, because 5G is the technology to level up capabilities in all kinds of different industries to drive the country productively. This is from its 3 basic properties: improved speeds, better connectivity of IoT, and more responsive and stable networks. A lot of education yields a lot of expertise, which can be adapted without having to follow the lead from foreign countries all the time, and AIS will be on hand to offer its full support.”

During 27th to 31st May 2022, students of Visiwapat camp, the Faculty of Engineering, Chulalongkorn University went to join activity with local habitants. In this activity, students tested the solar-cell pumps for draining water to the agricultural areas and acquired information from habitants who are members of Nam-Pia models in both demonstration and extended areas for further activities in the future.

On 30th May 2022, the handover ceremony of the 5th Visawapat Damn at Huai Tang Ho, Nan Province was carried out. The previously mentioned dam was built in the month of January 2022. Assistant Prof. Dr. Chaiyaporn Phuprasert, the assistant to president, Chulalongkorn University, Associate Prof. Dr. Dr. Sanpetch Chuenithipaisal, Associate Dean for Student Affairs, Faculty of Engineering, students from the Visawapat student camp, the board of Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), representatives from The Siam Cement Public Company Limited (SCG), Mr. Nopporn Ruengsawang, the mayor of Ampher Nanoi, Mr. Rittha Thajai, the mayor of Tambol Santia, local offices and habitants of the previously mentioned area witnessed the ceremony and the altogether joined to plant durian trees.

The habitants of Baan Chetawaan, Tambon Santiam, Ampher Nanoi, Nan Province used to be farmers for long period. However, due to the change of climate causing long draught period which is unfavorable condition for agriculture in the area, the habitants can only grow corn plants to feed livestock. From this reason, the habitants had to invade more the forest area, to use herbicide and insecticide causing soil damage, and to burn the residual corn cob.

From the mentioned problems, the origin of all was lacking of water resources and this problem can be resolved by constructing the dam to store water for multi-purposes during the drought period.

From 2018 to 2021, the Visawapat student camp has continuously been in the areas with water shortage problem to construct the dam, sediment-trap dam, and water pipe to link agricultural area (total length is 1.4 km). By constructing these dams and water systems, the plantation of corn was reduced from 100 percent to alternative plants such as durian, cacao, and dates.

ALSTOM AND CHULA ENGINEERING PARTNER TO STRENGTHEN THAILAND’S RAILWAY INDUSTRY AND BUILD ENGINEERING TALENT PIPELINE

Alstom, global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, and the Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Engineering (Chula Engineering) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to further Thailand’s railway industry development and collaboration over the next five years.

The partnership between Alstom and Chula Engineering seeks to foster greater collaboration in local industry research and development, as well as educational and training programmes in this highly-specialised field of railway engineering. As the country becomes more urbanised, many public transport projects are increasingly being built within and beyond the capital city of Bangkok, and local railway expertise will continue to be in strong demand.

Alstom is no stranger to the Chulalongkorn University, with over 20 alumni across varied disciplines joining the Group’s Bangkok hub in recent years, driving not only local, but also international mobility projects. Today, the Bangkok hub has grown to become one of the three global engineering centres for Asia Pacific since 1997, comprising over 450 skilled engineers of whom 85% are made up of locals. Leveraging the synergies between industry and academia, the agreement will therefore serve as a practical platform for the Faculty’s engineering undergraduates to hone their railway skills while pursuing a degree. Readying the students to shape Thailand’s future of transport, areas of collaboration include internship and practical training programmes, amongst other academic activities.

Dr. Katrin Luger, Alstom’s Managing Director for Thailand, said: “As a strong local player for urban and mainline railway systems in Thailand with over 40 years of track record, we have the best know-how and experience within the mobility sector. We are very thrilled to be embarking on this MOU with the Chula Engineering, a leading railway engineering institution, to exchange and share knowledge with Chula Engineering and young engineering talents. We look forward to continue nurturing and developing a pipeline of local talents with deep technical rail expertise and cross-functional capabilities, to transform transport in and beyond Thailand.”

Prof. Dr. Supot Teachavorasinskun, Dean of Chula Engineering, said: “The increasing demand for professional human resources following the transportation development in many areas in Thailand has attracted students’ interest in railway engineering. The expertise of Chula Engineering, such as mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, civil engineering, and others, can help build the foundation and theories. When students can engage in practice with market-leading players like Alstom and learn the real applications in the industry, they will be able to enhance their skills and sharpen their knowledge.”

The MOU was inked at the sidelines of the Asia Pacific Rail 2022, which was being held in Thailand for the first time and Alstom’s first in-person regional exhibition in more than two years. As part of its efforts to build up an industry-ready engineering pipeline for Thailand’s rail sector and the optimism for the Thai market, Alstom is looking to add 20% additional workforce to its talent pool by the end of 2022. With continued focus on hiring across the value chain – from production to methods, supplies, and functions, the recruitment drive, being promoted at the exhibition, will be a mix of engineers, technicians, and data science specialists.
