CES has been established since 2004, initially as Center for Engineering Research and Technical Service, Faculty of Engineering. The administrative change took place in the 8/2557 Faculty of Engineering Executive Committee Meeting dated July 16th, 2014 to  entitle Center for Engineering Service (CES) as a business unit of the Faculty of Engineering with a flexible management system. The goals for CES are to seek supplementary revenues to support the Faculty of Engineering, to coordinate as a center for providing academic services, to facilitate faculty members in developing engineering technology, knowledge and experience which can be applied in teaching and providing technical advices.

Academic services are generally referred to as  academic  activities or projects provided to the society by higher education institutions within the community who act as the centers for academic references with leading roles in strengthening the academic, technology and social development at both  national and international levels. The academic services provided can be in the form of paid services or free-of-charge. The knowledge and experience gained from these services can be integrated for the social development.

CES offers 3 types of academic services as follows.

1.Analysis, Testing and Inspection

            The analysis, testing and inspection services, including the use of engineering instruments and on-site testing, are provided by 5 Engineering Departments as follows.

2.  Workshops, seminars, discussions and lectures

Workshops and seminars that are organized by CES can be categorized into 2 types as follows.

• Free-of-charge programs: Programs organized by CES twice a year for general public with no registration fee, funded by the Faculty of Engineering; and
• Commissioned programs: Programs that are sponsored by external agencies or with the collection of registration fee.

The topics of the organized programs are not necessarily related to the field of engineering, but are viewed beneficial for the Faculty members or the general public.

Examples of these programs are personal income tax and financial and retirement planning workshops where guest speakers are invited; the workshop on nuclear power plants organized for the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) with speakers from the Department of Nuclear Engineering; international conferences that serve as platforms for presenting and exchanging research ideas in order to foster academic and research collaboration with international institutions; and the in-house seminar on procurement procedures according to the  Procurement Act, BE 2560.

3. Academic and Professional Consulting, Translation of Technical Documents, Research and Data Collection, Planning and Design

The academic services are provided in the form of projects undertaken by different Engineering Departments, which are Department of Civil Engineering, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Department of Chemical Engineering, Department of Industrial Engineering, Department of Electrical Engineering, Department of Survey Engineering, Department of Environmental Engineering, Department of Computer Engineering, Department of Mining and Petroleum engineering, Department of Nuclear Engineering, Department of Water Resources Engineering and International School of Engineering (ISE). Listed below are examples of these projects:

Research and Data Collection:

• Third generation solar cell technology and its potential for commercial research and development
• Methods for improving project management efficiency
• Reduction of chemical absorption in the storage zone as a process of increasing oil productivity for Sirikit source
• Feasibility study and collection of radiation inspection data

Planning and Design:

• Energy conservation campaign (development of prototypes for assessment of carbon footprint in Chulalongkorn University, part 1: buildings)
• Rural highway development planning for BE 2561 fiscal year, group 1
• Testing of QZSS pilot satellite system
• Development of disaster database and geographical information system (GIS) for providing assistance to victims of disasters, Phase 2

CES has continuously been providing academic services in the field of engineering to public and private organizations, state enterprises and international organizations, including large national infrastructure projects.

    • In June 2018, CES organized a seminar on “Government Procurement Procedures for Research and Academic Service Projects according to the Procurement Act, BE 2560.” Ms.Jariya Lapavarakitchai, Director of the Office of Fiscal Management, Accounts and Supplies, Chulalongkorn University was invited as the guest speaker.
